Administering Oaths & Affirmations
Starting at $50

An oath/affirmation means you are making a sworn statement that the contents of a document are true. This is also called a "jurat". These are administered by a notary who completes the jurat certificate, proving that the oath/affirmation was properly completed. Common documents that require an oath/affirmation include affidavits, depositions, and applications.

When you need a notary to complete an oath/affirmation, Doyle & Co. makes the process easy by traveling directly to you! Call, text, or email to schedule your appointment today.

What's the difference between an oath and an affirmation?

An oath is a solemn, spoken pledge to God or a Supreme Being. An affirmation is a spoken pledge made on your own personal honor with no reference to a higher power. You may choose which one you would prefer for your notarization, as either one is acceptable.

Does this document require administering an oath/affirmation?

Check the wording on the notarial section of your document: “Sworn/affirmed and subscribed before me…” usually indicates that it is necessary to administer an oath or affirmation to notarize the document. If you have any questions about the document you need notarized, reach out to us! We’ll be happy to help where we can.

What do I need in order to complete a jurat?

You will need a valid, unexpired ID to verify your identity to the notary. See our ID Guide to ensure you possess an acceptable form of ID. The person that is signing and swearing/affirming to the truthness of the document must be the person that personally appears before the notary. Have your document that requires the oath/affirmation in your possession. Please make sure the document is completely filled out before the notarization. If there is no jurat wording on the document but you know that it requires an oath/affirmation, please let us know when making your appointment and we will be able to provide a Jurat Certificate.

Please note: If there is no wording that indicates whether a document requires making an acknowledgement or taking an oath/affirmation, your notary will not be able to advise you on which one to choose. Doing so would be considered the unauthorized practice of law. Please consult an attorney or professional who can advise you how your document should be notarized.
